Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Geologists use the term “marble” to refer to metamorphosed limestone; however stonemasons use the term more broadly to encompass unmetamorphosed limestone. Marble is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material.

Granite is one of the most beautiful varieties of stone in the world today. It is an ageless, yet always contemporary, and stylish look. Granite is produced in many countries around the world. When designing kitchen interiors, granite is often preferred over other materials because of its strength.  It does not scratch as easily as marble and it is easily cleaned. Marble is durable and comes in a gloss or hammered look but it costs more and is less hardy so people tend to prefer to use granite for their bench tops and high use areas of their kitchens. Granite is harder in structure than marble and has a different look. There is a much tighter pattern in granite than in marble. There are, however, some superior types of granite that cost as much as marble but look like marble without being as fragile.

Laminate is primarily made from a combination of kraft paper (similiar to brown paper bags), melamine and phenolic resins (a combination of phenols, melamine and formaldehyde) and high quality print paper (this is where the image or print is printed on). These layers of paper and resin are fused together under heat and pressure and the end result is laminate. Laminate is available in an array of differing surface textures. You can have a glossy, satin, matt, or textured surface. Laminates that have a glossy surface tend to show scratches very easily (they are usually recommended to be used in vertical applications) and should be avoided in horizontal applications such as benchtops. Laminates with a textured surface are favoured for benchtops as scratches are less easily seen (due to the way light is scattered on the textured surface). Deeply textured surfaces should be avoided as it is often difficult to remove grease and dirt that can get trapped. Laminate benchtops are very tough and durable. They will give you many, many years of service if looked after correctly. It will not take kindly to heat and will blister and break if a hot saucepan is placed on its surface. Sharp knives will cut into the laminate surface and once this is done it cannot be repaired. Always use a trivet or surface protector when putting hot saucepans on the bench and likewise use a cutting board when using knives for cutting.

Timber benchtops are warm to touch and will age beautifully with time.Solid timber bench tops are a great choice as they are as resilient and durable as they are attractive. The range of timbers available means that you’re sure to find one to create the look that you have in mind.To protect the surface, the timber benchtop is either sealed with polyurethane or wood oil. Polyurethane usually gives a higher gloss finish, is more durable and requires less maintenance than an oiled timber benchtop. Solid timber bench tops have stood the test of time due to their strong, sturdy nature and their ability to sit comfortably with any décor, from contemporary to traditional, but there are lots of reasons to opt for timber.

Solid timber bench tops have remained popular with kitchen designers due to their versatility. One of the advantages with timber is that it can be shaped to suit any application and with its natural good looks and warmth of character, timber has managed to hold onto its timeless appeal.

A vinyl wrap door is one where the door is made up of an MDF panel that has been cut, routed and profiled as desired and then glued and covered with a vinyl form that is pressed to the door using heat and vacuum. The back of the door is usually pre-laminated.  Vinyl wrapped doors have no joints as the vinyl goes all the way around the door
